The Op-Ed
In addition to accepting our regular Oxbridge-style essays, we are excited to introduce a brand-new submission category for the second round of the 2026–2027 Oxford Essay Competition: The Op-Ed.
Name Origin: The term stands for "opposite the editorial page," referring to the traditional print newspaper layout where guest opinion pieces were printed on the page facing the publisher's official editorials.
An Op-Ed is a concise, highly persuasive opinion piece typically written for a newspaper, magazine, or digital publication. Unlike traditional academic writing, which often involves extensive research skills and long-form arguments, an Op-Ed requires you to take a firm stance on a contemporary issue and convince a broad audience of your viewpoint within a very strict word limit. To excel in this category, you must be bold, articulate, and highly strategic with your language. Choose your prompt, pick a side, and persuade us.
Op-Ed Submission Rules
· Word Count: 100 to 500 words maximum. Every word must count.
· Style: A persuasive, journalistic opinion piece.
· Prompt Selection: You must select one of the five specific Op-Ed prompts designated for your age group.
Judging Criteria
Your submission will be evaluated using modern think-tank assessment standards for effective public writing, taking into account Oxford alumni feedback. The marking committee will not be looking for dense academic prose; rather, they are specifically looking for:
· Persuasive Articulation: The ability to express a strong, definitive opinion clearly, confidently, and concisely.
· Influence and Impact: A compelling narrative hook and a structural flow designed to actively capture attention and change the reader's mind.
· Effective Debate Methodology: The strategic use of evidence, logical reasoning, and the successful anticipation and dismantling of counterarguments, all executed within a heavily restricted word count.
